What’s Trending: Cannabis Edibles With CBD, CBN, and CBG

Cannabis edibles have been popular for a long time. Whether it’s your classic cookies and brownies or the more recently popular gummies, edibles offer a different experience compared to smoking or vaping cannabis, with longer onset and duration.

Most edibles are completely focused on THC with little to no other active ingredients, with a few options also containing CBD. But there’s a lot more to cannabis than that.

Most edibles on the market are missing other cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, and CBN, which work in synergy with THC and push its effect in a different direction.

Keep reading to learn more about these beneficial compounds and how new products are pushing the boundary to create a unique edible experience.

CBD: THC’s Non-Intoxicating Cousin

Known for its anti-inflammatory and calming effects, cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most abundant cannabinoid in cannabis. Hemp-derived CBD wellness products have exploded in popularity as a non-intoxicating alternative to THC-rich cannabis.

Multiple human studies suggest that CBD can reduce anxiety and counteract THC’s negative psychoactive side effects like anxiety and paranoia. This makes CBD a great addition to THC for people who are sensitive to its effects or simply prefer a smoother, relaxing experience.

Say Hello to Minor Cannabinoids

Minor cannabinoids get the name from their relatively small (<1%) concentrations in most cannabis strains. Like CBD and THC, they’re capable of interacting with our body’s endocannabinoid system, producing a variety of potentially beneficial effects.

The two best-known minor cannabinoids are cannabinol (CBN) and cannabigerol (CBG). Both are non-intoxicating and have been gaining recognition for their unique effects.

CBN is created during the breakdown of THC, which is why it’s abundant in aged cannabis (and why old weed is known to be so “chill”). CBN is touted for its sleep benefits and you’ll commonly find it combined with THC and CBD products designed to support a good night’s rest.

CBG is another minor cannabinoid with a unique origin story. It’s made from cannabigerolic acid (CBGa), popularly known as the “mother of all cannabinoids” because it’s the precursor to THC, CBD, and most other cannabinoids.

CBG is believed to impart uplifting effects, with research suggesting that CBG-rich cannabis may be particularly helpful for anxiety and depression. Anecdotal reports also suggest the potential to help with sleep and pain.

Pearls: Cannabis Gummies With Added CBD, CBN, and CBG

Pearls is a new brand of cannabis gummies that combine THC with other cannabinoids for a unique experience. The gummies come in four flavours and formulas curated for specific effects:

  • Blue Razzleberry – flavoured gummies with a 3:1 ratio of CBG (6 mg) to THC (2 mg), designed for uplifting effects
  • Sour Apple – 2 mg THC gummies for the tried-and-true edible experience
  • Pomegranate – flavoured gummies with a 4:1 ratio of CBD (8 mg) to THC (2 mg) for relaxing and winding down
  • Blackberry Lemonade – flavoured gummies infused with a 1:1:1 ratio of CBN (2 mg), CBD (2 mg), and THC (2 mg), a formula designed to help you sleep

Show your Pride with Reef Organic

Cannabis and the LGBTQIA+ community have fought side by side for many years. As we enter June, we celebrate Pride month — and you know what that means. Canadian Cannabis Producers share their innovative products that support LGBTQ+ causes .

We’re thrilled to highlight our partner, Reef Organic by Aqualitas, for their dedicated efforts towards social and environmental initiatives – all within the cannabis space. Reef Organic has an impressive commitment to their own core values: Diversity, Inclusion, Sustainability, and Innovation. In fact, their team is composed of 46% women, 10% BIPOC and 8% who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+.

Cannametrics is proud to partner with socially, environmentally, and forward-thinking producers like Aqualitas as they blaze a path of social justice and awareness through their cannabis products. And while cannabis products are intended to make us feel good, we can feel even better knowing that our product is contributing towards a positive cause. Which brings us to Reef Organic’s exciting and innovative release this June: the True Colours Mixed Gummy Pack.

“Be True To You” Campaign

Reef Organics’ socially conscious program will be donating 1% of sales from their new True Colours Mixed Pack of gummies to rainbow coalition initiatives across Canada. Their partnerships include Egale and  NSRAP.

Egale is Canada’s leading organization for 2SLGBTQI people and issues. They improve and save lives through research, education, awareness, and by advocating for human rights and equality in Canada and around the world. For more information visit: www.Egale.ca

The Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project (NSRAP) seeks equity, justice, and human rights for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in Nova Scotia by creating change in our communities and society at large so that all 2SLGBTQIA+ people are included, valued, and celebrated. For more information visit: www.NSRAP.ca

The Gummies:

Each colourful gummy bursts with its own flavour and strain: The Strawberry and Watermelon chews are infused with organic, Co2 Extracted Ghost Train Haze distillate. The Blue Raspberry and Mango chews are infused with organic Cold Creek Kush distillate. Each pack comes with these 4 gummies and delivers 2.5mg of THC per piece.

Additionally, Reef Organic will be providing Budtenders and customers the opportunity to try this new colourful creation in uninfused sample packs.

The contribution to Pride doesn’t stop at the gummies. A QR code resides on the back of each package and links to additional tools and content to build awareness of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The Process:

Nick Vorauer, Aqualitas’ Lead Scientist for Extraction & Product Development, on the process behind their cannabis gummies. The extraction process is fascinating and unique to every Licensed Producer. After their organic cannabis is ground and decarboxylated, Reef Organics uses supercritical carbon dioxide extraction for their extract. After this, the extracted cannabis is winterized to remove plant fats and waxes that made it through the extraction process. Once finalized, the distillate is sent for the required laboratory testing then used in their gummies.

Find Your True Colours Near You:

Reef Organic’s True Colours mixed pack will be available in: Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. All proceeds will support the True Colours Initiative.

From the Producer:

Reef Organic products are made by Aqualitas – Canada’s first Clean Green Certified organic producer. This certification provides you the assurance that the products you’re purchasing are organically grown using international organic and sustainable cultivation practices. It is also a recognition of the company’s commitment to regulatory compliance, quality, and environmental stewardship.

Their mission is to produce premium organic craft cannabis with the lightest environmental footprint possible, packaged in containers you can feel good about keeping, recycling or tossing in the compost bin.

Reef Organics is driven by their four core pillars: Inclusive Communities, Enabling Diversity, Protecting the Planet, and Truth & Reconciliation, all of which further underline their commitment to social change and equality through this campaign.

Closing:

Reef Organic honours Pride by taking action and giving back to the community. Above all, Reef Organic shows us how cannabis unites us and can positively contribute towards social and global change.

We’re proud to have a partner that demonstrates commitment to better change through the use of innovative cannabis products. Express your True Colours this Pride!

We pride ourselves on fostering a team that wants to provide the best consumer experience possible, we love what we do and want it to show in our products. We are committed to supporting the “ground breakers” of the industry and legitimizing the white market by bringing true premium quad cannabis to Canada.

These growers specialize in small batch limited edition crops; the attention to detail and love for their crops is unparalleled. There is a master grower for every 2000 square feet of canopy, with each plant getting the daily attention needed to produce the best product. Sitka is keeping it old school and allowing the pioneers to do what they do best… Grow Awesome Weed. And we are lucky enough to share it with all of Canada.

What is CBN (Cannabinol)? Here Are the Basics

Although THC and CBD have received most of the attention, cannabis contains many other beneficial cannabinoids. One such compound is cannabinol (CBN).

Unlike most of its cousins, CBN is made through the breakdown of another cannabinoid: THC. That’s why you’ll find more CBN in aged cannabis that’s been exposed to oxygen.

CBN is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid with many potential benefits. But there’s a good deal of misinformation floating around it.

CBN and Sleep: More Myth Than Science

In the past few years, CBN went from relative obscurity to becoming a popular sleep aid.

But this reputation is largely based on anecdotes rather than scientific evidence. It all started when some people noticed that aged cannabis made them more sleepy. Since old cannabis has more CBN, they assumed it was the compound responsible.

But we don’t know that for certain. According to leading cannabis researcher Dr. Ethan Russo, CBN doesn’t have any notable sedating effects. He believes that aged cannabis makes you sleepy because it contains more sedating terpenes.

Research has also failed to prove that CBN helps you sleep. One 1975 study found that CBN enhanced the sleep-inducing effects of THC, possibly through the entourage effect. But CBN by itself didn’t cause any drowsiness.

Meanwhile, a 2021 review paper criticized claims that CBN has sleep-promoting effects, concluding that “there is insufficient published evidence to support sleep-related claims.”

The bottom line is that solid evidence is needed before we can confirm that CBN is the rockstar sleep aid some make it out to be.

Other CBN Benefits

Studies have also shown that CBN has other possible benefits, including neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, antibacterial, and appetite-stimulating effects.

But more research is needed before we understand its potential uses as well as CBD and THC.

CBN vs. CBD

CBN and CBD have a lot in common. They won’t get you high and boast a long list of potential benefits, many of which overlap. But there are some key differences.

For one, whereas CBN can increase appetite, CBD seems to have the opposite effect. CBD is also much easier to source because it’s found in large amounts in hemp.

Meanwhile, CBN is a minor cannabinoid that’s typically found in small concentrations in cannabis (unless it’s been exposed to oxygen).

CBN: More Research is Needed

Interest in CBN, CBG, and other minor cannabinoids is growing. CBN is particularly popular as a sleep aid, although it may have other benefits.

But there isn’t much evidence that CBN promotes sleep. If you do want to give it a try, be sure to choose a full-spectrum product that contains CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids.

The only relevant study found that CBN enhanced THC’s sedation, suggesting that CBN may strengthen the sleep-promoting effects of other cannabinoids.

You won’t find many cannabis strains with significant amounts of CBN. Instead, CBN is usually combined with CBD and other hemp cannabinoids in tinctures, edibles, and other concentrated products.
