What’s Trending: Cannabis Edibles With CBD, CBN, and CBG

Cannabis edibles have been popular for a long time. Whether it’s your classic cookies and brownies or the more recently popular gummies, edibles offer a different experience compared to smoking or vaping cannabis, with longer onset and duration.

Most edibles are completely focused on THC with little to no other active ingredients, with a few options also containing CBD. But there’s a lot more to cannabis than that.

Most edibles on the market are missing other cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, and CBN, which work in synergy with THC and push its effect in a different direction.

Keep reading to learn more about these beneficial compounds and how new products are pushing the boundary to create a unique edible experience.

CBD: THC’s Non-Intoxicating Cousin

Known for its anti-inflammatory and calming effects, cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most abundant cannabinoid in cannabis. Hemp-derived CBD wellness products have exploded in popularity as a non-intoxicating alternative to THC-rich cannabis.

Multiple human studies suggest that CBD can reduce anxiety and counteract THC’s negative psychoactive side effects like anxiety and paranoia. This makes CBD a great addition to THC for people who are sensitive to its effects or simply prefer a smoother, relaxing experience.

Say Hello to Minor Cannabinoids

Minor cannabinoids get the name from their relatively small (<1%) concentrations in most cannabis strains. Like CBD and THC, they’re capable of interacting with our body’s endocannabinoid system, producing a variety of potentially beneficial effects.

The two best-known minor cannabinoids are cannabinol (CBN) and cannabigerol (CBG). Both are non-intoxicating and have been gaining recognition for their unique effects.

CBN is created during the breakdown of THC, which is why it’s abundant in aged cannabis (and why old weed is known to be so “chill”). CBN is touted for its sleep benefits and you’ll commonly find it combined with THC and CBD products designed to support a good night’s rest.

CBG is another minor cannabinoid with a unique origin story. It’s made from cannabigerolic acid (CBGa), popularly known as the “mother of all cannabinoids” because it’s the precursor to THC, CBD, and most other cannabinoids.

CBG is believed to impart uplifting effects, with research suggesting that CBG-rich cannabis may be particularly helpful for anxiety and depression. Anecdotal reports also suggest the potential to help with sleep and pain.

Pearls: Cannabis Gummies With Added CBD, CBN, and CBG

Pearls is a new brand of cannabis gummies that combine THC with other cannabinoids for a unique experience. The gummies come in four flavours and formulas curated for specific effects:

  • Blue Razzleberry – flavoured gummies with a 3:1 ratio of CBG (6 mg) to THC (2 mg), designed for uplifting effects
  • Sour Apple – 2 mg THC gummies for the tried-and-true edible experience
  • Pomegranate – flavoured gummies with a 4:1 ratio of CBD (8 mg) to THC (2 mg) for relaxing and winding down
  • Blackberry Lemonade – flavoured gummies infused with a 1:1:1 ratio of CBN (2 mg), CBD (2 mg), and THC (2 mg), a formula designed to help you sleep

How We Got to Drinkable Cannabis

How We Got to Drinkable Cannabis

Technology has changed the way we can deliver cannabinoids and cut the onset time down from potential hours to minutes.

Cannabis-infused beverages, as we know them today, were not always possible because cannabinoids like THC aren’t naturally water-soluble. To get to where we are today has required significant innovation on the part of beverage makers who have overcome challenges to deliver a truly state of the art cannabis experience.

Unlike smoking or vaping, the direct ingestion of cannabinoids in their normal state leads to delayed effects and low absorption, so much so that only a small fraction of what you consume reaches your bloodstream and has the desired effect. In the past, traditionally cannabis beverages like bhang relied on combining cannabinoids with fats and were essentially the same delivery route as traditional edibles, with the same challenges of slow onset and difficulty with dosing.

To solve these problems and usher in a new era of drinkable cannabis, innovators like HYTN are using high-tech nanotechnology to deliver consistent, cannabis beverage experiences with a rapid onset and predictable peak.

What Are Cannabis Nanoemulsions?

Nanotechnology deals with things on a very small scale. How small? We’re talking nanometers. Consider that a sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick.

In the cannabis industry, nanotech is increasingly used to help cannabinoids (which are lipophilic, fat-liking compounds) blend in water and improve their absorption.

The most popular approach is to create nanoemulsions where cannabinoid droplets are broken down to nano size and wrapped in a layer of emulsifying agents to form tiny spheres. This allows them to disperse in water, making transparent, effective cannabis-infused beverages a reality. The same process can also be used for other products, such as tinctures, capsules, and topicals.

But that’s not the only advantage of nanoemulsions. By reducing particle size and increasing surface area, they also greatly increase and speed up the absorption of cannabinoids. That’s why properly-formulated nano beverages can have more consistent, fast-acting, and potent effects, as well as a longer shelf life.

For example, two recent studies found that the same doses of THC and CBD delivered in a nano-based formula had significantly higher and faster absorption in healthy adults than standard formulations.

Similarly, a 2019 study of a CBD nanoemulsion in rats reported that it had greater absorption and reduced the time to peak effects by a factor of 3 compared to CBD oil.

"The most popular approach is to create nanoemulsions where cannabinoid droplets are broken down to nano size and wrapped in a layer of emulsifying agents to form tiny spheres. This allows them to disperse in water, making transparent, effective cannabis-infused beverages a reality."

HYTN Elevation Technology

HYTN’s proprietary Elevation Technology® uses a high-tech ultrasonic approach, which has the benefit of creating nanoemulsions with smaller droplet sizes and greater stability ideal for delivering cannabinoids.

High-intensity ultrasound equipment is used to create soundwaves that break down cannabis extract droplets into nano-sized particles smaller than 100 nanometers, which are then encapsulated in an emulsifier.

These nanoparticles are evenly suspended in water, creating clear, odorless, and almost tasteless cannabis nanoemulsions that can be blended into beverages. They can also be used for edibles and even topicals.

HYTN is also unique for the level of care they put into their products. Using their own dynamic light-scattering equipment to measure the size, distribution, and stability of its nanoemulsions, they are performing next-level quality assurance so that consumers know they are getting the best possible results.

Beverages made with HYTN’s method can be felt as quickly as 10 minutes, whereas standard edibles and drinks can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in. They also provide consistent, predictable effects, taking the guesswork out of figuring out your dosage. That’s especially important for a product containing THC since overdosing on edibles is a common problem.

The Process:

Nick Vorauer, Aqualitas’ Lead Scientist for Extraction & Product Development, on the process behind their cannabis gummies. The extraction process is fascinating and unique to every Licensed Producer. After their organic cannabis is ground and decarboxylated, Reef Organics uses supercritical carbon dioxide extraction for their extract. After this, the extracted cannabis is winterized to remove plant fats and waxes that made it through the extraction process. Once finalized, the distillate is sent for the required laboratory testing then used in their gummies.

Find Your True Colours Near You:

Reef Organic’s True Colours mixed pack will be available in: Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. All proceeds will support the True Colours Initiative.

What is CBN (Cannabinol)? Here Are the Basics

Although THC and CBD have received most of the attention, cannabis contains many other beneficial cannabinoids. One such compound is cannabinol (CBN).

Unlike most of its cousins, CBN is made through the breakdown of another cannabinoid: THC. That’s why you’ll find more CBN in aged cannabis that’s been exposed to oxygen.

CBN is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid with many potential benefits. But there’s a good deal of misinformation floating around it.

CBN and Sleep: More Myth Than Science

In the past few years, CBN went from relative obscurity to becoming a popular sleep aid.

But this reputation is largely based on anecdotes rather than scientific evidence. It all started when some people noticed that aged cannabis made them more sleepy. Since old cannabis has more CBN, they assumed it was the compound responsible.

But we don’t know that for certain. According to leading cannabis researcher Dr. Ethan Russo, CBN doesn’t have any notable sedating effects. He believes that aged cannabis makes you sleepy because it contains more sedating terpenes.

Research has also failed to prove that CBN helps you sleep. One 1975 study found that CBN enhanced the sleep-inducing effects of THC, possibly through the entourage effect. But CBN by itself didn’t cause any drowsiness.

Meanwhile, a 2021 review paper criticized claims that CBN has sleep-promoting effects, concluding that “there is insufficient published evidence to support sleep-related claims.”

The bottom line is that solid evidence is needed before we can confirm that CBN is the rockstar sleep aid some make it out to be.

Other CBN Benefits

Studies have also shown that CBN has other possible benefits, including neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, antibacterial, and appetite-stimulating effects.

But more research is needed before we understand its potential uses as well as CBD and THC.

CBN and CBD have a lot in common. They won’t get you high and boast a long list of potential benefits, many of which overlap. But there are some key differences.

For one, whereas CBN can increase appetite, CBD seems to have the opposite effect. CBD is also much easier to source because it’s found in large amounts in hemp.

Meanwhile, CBN is a minor cannabinoid that’s typically found in small concentrations in cannabis (unless it’s been exposed to oxygen).

CBN: More Research is Needed

Interest in CBN, CBG, and other minor cannabinoids is growing. CBN is particularly popular as a sleep aid, although it may have other benefits.

But there isn’t much evidence that CBN promotes sleep. If you do want to give it a try, be sure to choose a full-spectrum product that contains CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids.

The only relevant study found that CBN enhanced THC’s sedation, suggesting that CBN may strengthen the sleep-promoting effects of other cannabinoids.

You won’t find many cannabis strains with significant amounts of CBN. Instead, CBN is usually combined with CBD and other hemp cannabinoids in tinctures, edibles, and other concentrated products.

From THC BioMed

A recipient of a rare exemption research 56 license, THC BioMed is one of the pioneers to research and study cannabis since its founding in 2012 by John Miller. Through years of experience, THC BioMed’s team of experts has perfected the art of cultivating only the highest quality cannabis grown indoors in beautiful Kelowna, British Columbia. THC BioMed passionately grows its strains organically, with the purest of nutrients and without the use of pesticides or other exogenous chemicals.

We are not just Canada’s oldest licensed producer. We offer a wide variety of medicinal genetics of dried flowers and innovative edible options. Today, our products are accessible to all medical patients around Canada via our web store, and we are present in dispensaries in five Canadian provinces (BC, ON, SK, YT, and MB). THC Biomed is traded on the Canadian Securities Exchange under the ticker, THC (CNSX: THC).

Our focus is to offer customers the highest quality cannabis at a price that is affordable for everyone.

Unlike many LPs, THC BioMed cultivates its flowers in small batches, so everything is closely monitored. Growing in such a highly controlled environment gives the company unparalleled power to regulate all aspects of the growing cycle. The plants are only grown indoors in small rooms with the desired light, temperature, and humidity. Each plant is hand watered. There are absolutely no pesticides, and critters are kept away by physical means and tightly sealed rooms. Every lot is subject to Health Canada’s standardized testing requirements.

The process is mainly done by hand, from cannabis harvesting to live flower trimming. The product is laid to dry on trays and further trimmed by hand. After drying, the flower is cured for several weeks before final inspection, testing, and then packaging.

THC BioMed’s Landrace strains are proprietary strains with genetics that originated from Africa. For consistency, the plant environment is replicated like its origin to achieve the same growth and development as its original natural habitat.

THC BioMed created its unique strain of Landraces by taking two landrace strains (both sourced from each strain, where they have carefully selected the best performing batch in terms of effectiveness and consistency in results) and creating a hybrid strain. The new strain is then introduced to environments that resemble that of both parents as closely as possible. After being subjected to this environment through several generations, THC BioMed created a hybrid landrace. With this method, our hybrid Landraces have a long-lasting and uplifting effect compared with the rest.
